New Year's Resolution - A Blog Series

Part 14: Back to Basics

By Retta Witter, Senior Consultant, J. Geiger Consulting, Inc.

Back to Basics: My goal is to become a 1000 miler. The Ice Age Trail (IAT) is 1147.4 miles. I currently have 21.5 miles completed which is 1.8 %.

Last week I talked about how to deal with unexpected changes. Based on the options I already had researched for some next steps and with the changed requirements of wanting to keep the camping sites between 5 to 7 miles apart. We did a part of the Jerry Lake Segment.

Remember to celebrate your milestones as they prepare you for the road ahead.

Along this journey of doing this, I went back to the basics of business analysis. Normally I do it in the business environment without thinking, it has become rote, however I had to really think about fully applying the processes and how to apply them to a non-business case which got me back to the basics. I believe this has made me a better BA as well. When I played competitive sports, the coaches preached about executing the fundamentals. Fundamentals is how you win games.

By going back to the basics, I know I felt more comfortable with being able to do through hiking. I know there are still things that will always be out of my control like weather but by doing my work and focusing on the fundamentals my future experiences will be better, no matter what the adventure.

I started this adventure series as a way for me to study for my CBAP certification in a different way that I and others could relate to and have fun doing it. Through this experience I noticed that at work I started making sure I really went back to the basics as well. My documentation on a recent alternative solution at work was better and outlined with what management needed to make their decision.

My first goal was to hike the Lake Eleven segment. That didn’t happen but I got more miles on the trail, and I learned a lot about me in the process. So, I will be celebrating the completion of this part of the blog series and continuing on with my adventures.

While you are on your journeys stop and smell the roses or in this case the Marsh Marigold.

Return next week for My VLOG on the experience: And into the woods I go.
